FAQ
Questions
Forza Horizon 1: ReImagined is the 2012 Forza Horizon, recompiled to run natively on Windows and Linux, and online again. Something not answered here? Ask on the Discord or open an issue.
Can I play the original Forza Horizon (2012) on PC?
Yes. Forza Horizon 1: ReImagined runs the Xbox 360 game natively on Windows 10/11 and Linux. The launcher builds the game on your PC from your own copy, with Title Update 4 and all 23 DLC packages if you have them.
What is a recomp? Is ReImagined an emulator?
ReImagined is a static recompilation (a "recomp"): the game's original PowerPC executable is translated ahead of time into C++ and compiled into a native program on your PC, instead of being interpreted while you play. It is built with ReIGlue, the project's fork of the ReXGlue SDK. The Xbox 360's graphics are translated to Vulkan or Direct3D 12.
Do I need my own copy of the game?
Yes. You need your own copy of Forza Horizon for Xbox 360: a disc image, a Games on Demand package or an extracted folder. Title Update 4 and the DLC are optional. ReImagined contains no game code or data, and never ships prebuilt game files: a download that claims to be the game is not from the project.
Can I still play Forza Horizon 1 online?
Yes. The official online services closed on 22 August 2023 (Turn 10's notice). Forza Live, the project's own server, brings them back: Horizon World free roam for up to 8 players, friends, chat, car clubs, a co-op festival, leaderboards and Rivals. Use the public server with no setup, or host your own.
Does it run on the Steam Deck?
It installs, but it isn't fast enough yet. With the Linux Flatpak: install it in Desktop Mode, then add Forza Horizon 1: ReImagined to Steam as a non-Steam game and it starts from Game Mode. The launcher picks a Steam Deck preset (30 fps, or 40 with the screen at 40 Hz). Expect about 15–20 fps in free roam and less in big races for now; performance work is in progress. Steam Deck guide
Does it run on a Mac?
Not yet for players. An Apple Silicon build is a source-build experiment: there is no Mac download and the launcher does not support macOS. macOS notes
What PC do I need?
Windows 10/11 64-bit or Linux x86-64, a GPU with Vulkan 1.3 (or Direct3D 12 on Windows), about 4 GB of free RAM while playing and about 15 GB of disk. A controller, keyboard and mouse, or a wheel.
Can it run at 60 fps or higher?
Yes. The original game runs at 30 fps; ReImagined lets you set 20 to 240 fps, or match your display, on a PC that can hold it. Measured numbers are on the features page.
Is ReImagined official?
No. It is a free, open-source community project under the GPL-3.0-or-later, not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Microsoft, Playground Games or Turn 10 Studios. The only official sources are the FH1-ReImagined GitHub organization, this website and the Discord.
