Forza Horizon 1ReImagined

Mile 0 · The festival

Forza Horizon 1ReImagined

The 2012 open-world racer, running natively on Linux and Windows, rebuilt around the modern Horizon experience: a shared online Colorado, leaderboards and rivals, and 60, 120 or 144 frames per second. The whole game has been played through, from the opening drive to the end of the festival.

No game code or game data is included. The launcher builds the game on your computer from your own copy of Forza Horizon (Xbox 360, Games on Demand package, and Title Update 4 and DLC if you have them). The first release is not out yet; the download buttons will point to it.

What you get

  • The whole game. Played through on ReImagined, from the opening drive to the end of the festival: free roam, festival events and races, showcase events, audio and saves. A Xenia Canary save can be continued.
  • Title Update 4. The default. It brings the Horizon Rally expansion (its map and your rally progress) and the 1000 Club in the pause menu, and all 23 DLC packages count as installed.
  • Keyboard and mouse, or a controller. Menus, free roam, races, the pause menu, the map and photo mode all play from the keyboard, with rebindable keys and a steering ramp. Throttle and brake are on/off.
  • 60, 120 or 144 fps with physics and race timing intact: a free roam drive holds 60, about 115 at 120 and 112 at 144.
  • Online free roam. The Horizon World playlist puts every online player into one shared Colorado, where events fill up with players and free grid slots with AI. Tested with two Title Update 4 players: world, 30 second event lobby, head-to-head, scores, Rivals, 1000 Club and host migration.
  • Leaderboards and rivals. Times, ghosts and bounties shared between players, Monthly Rivals, car clubs and the Message Center, all live again.
  • Your own servers. Xbox LIVE and Turn 10's services are gone, so the project ships the Forza Live server, self-hostable, with a public instance to join.

Linux is the most tested platform. Races with many AI cars are GPU-bound above 60 fps.

Ryzen 7 7800X3D with a Radeon RX 9060 XT. Races are bound by the GPU emulation above 60; the game runs its main loop at the target rate throughout, and 0 to 100 km/h takes 2.4 seconds at every rate.

Install in four steps

The first release is not out yet. These are the steps once it is.

  1. Get the launcher. From the latest release: on Linux the Flatpak (it works on Bazzite, SteamOS, Chimera, Ubuntu, Fedora and Arch; a .tar.gz is the alternative), on Windows the installer, which also sets up the Visual C++ 2015-2022 runtime.
  2. Point it at your game. In the launcher's Setup page choose your own Forza Horizon Games on Demand package (the base version), and optionally the Title Update 4 package (for Horizon Rally and the 1000 Club) and your DLC folder. They are extracted and checked for you.
  3. Build. The launcher generates the game from your copy and compiles it on your computer, downloading a compiler if you do not have one. A full build took 3.6 to 4.6 minutes on an 8-core desktop at 4 jobs, and can be cancelled and resumed.
  4. Play. Every setting has a page: frame rate, display, keyboard and mouse bindings, online server and your profile. Press Play.

You will need

  • Linux x86-64 or Windows 10/11 64-bit, with a Vulkan 1.3 GPU
  • About 4 GB of free RAM (the build peaks near 2 GB) and 15 GB of disk space
  • Your own copy of Forza Horizon for Xbox 360
  • A controller, or a keyboard and mouse

The Linux version is the most tested. Windows has run under Proton; the native Windows launcher and installer have not been tried on Windows yet.

The download contains no game code and no game data. The installer never ships a built game: your copy is the only source of the game on your PC.

Mile 48 · Playing online

One shared Colorado

The game signs in to a Forza Live server as a Gold member. Choose in the launcher how you play:

Public server
The shared world, leaderboards and rivals. The address is dyotserver.ddns.net:21200, filled in for you. You forward no ports.
Your own server
Run server/forza_live_server.py where your friends can reach it. It needs only Python 3. Hosting guide
This PC or offline
A private local server for yourself, or no Xbox LIVE at all.

In Multiplayer, pick Find Game and the Horizon World playlist: the server drops you into the fullest open world (8 players each), and everyone who joins after you is placed with you. Title Update 4 and base-game players are kept in separate rooms, since the two versions cannot play together.
